7 ways to upgrade your old computer

What happens when you have an old, low-performing computer that consumes your time and creates frustration every day? Here are 7 ways you can get the most out of it.

1. Update

You just installed a software or a game and your computer is slowing down while loading it?

Yeah, it’s probably great to spend some money and upgrade that turtle. It is definitely one of the best ways to speed up your old computer with minimal cost.

While an upgrade isn’t always possible, especially for laptops, you should still be able to upgrade your RAM and hard drive. RAM, also known as PC memory, can give you an extra boost in performance. And upgrading your hard drive to a solid state drive is another way to do it – not only will it start up faster, your apps will perform better too.

Only these two minor updates will keep your computer up-to-date and faster.

2. CPU steroids

While some computers don’t have the option to upgrade your processor unit and graphics card, you can always avoid tweaking your processor.

Overclock.

If you are adventurous enough, you can try overclocking your processor. It’s one of the best ways to get more performance without breaking the bank.

3. Monthly cleaning

Before coming to a conclusion, you may want to troubleshoot your computer and make sure the slowness is not caused by malware – viruses, worms, Trojans, spyware, or adware.

Do a full scan of your computer with your antivirus software like AVG, Symantec, or McAfee. Also, you can clean temporary files, update windows, and defragment your hard drive.

If all else fails, don’t despair, you can try reinstalling your operating system from scratch.

4. Accelerate your applications

Even when it sounds strange to be true, the truth is that some good programs are not optimized to run at peak performance.

For example, if your web browser loads slowly, it could be due to history size, installed extensions, or add-ons.

5. Previous versions

If your hardware is not compatible with the latest version of a particular application, such as Photoshop CS5, use an older version instead. While running older software isn’t always the best idea, if you can still get the job done, you’ll get less frustration and wasted time.

6. Deal with your external components

In addition to their superior performance, new computers offer the new feeling of owning them, like a new car. New mouse, keyboard and speakers. These are the items that you can easily replace, without breaking a sweat. Sometimes all you need to do is buy new external parts.

It will make your computer feel better, at least for a few months.

If you don’t like your current mouse or keyboard as much, due to its worn-out look or clicking problem, look for better ones and replace them instead. (Using a mouse feels so much better than using your laptop’s trackpad.)

Hate your old speakers? Get a new set of headphones; it is up to you to decide what you want.

Admittedly, those external parts won’t make your computer run any better, but it could keep you from pulling your hair out, as you grapple with frustration.

7. Lightweight Champion

If you really don’t want to part with your old computer, here is another way around it.

Install another operating system and then give them a try.

And there are many options available. Great news is that some of them are free.

Here are some of the options available on the market today: Linux mint, Chrome OS, Jolicloud, Ubuntu. They should work better even on older hardware.

If all else fails, seriously, you may have to bite the bullet and go out and buy a new computer. And if you decide to get rid of your old computer, make sure you recycle it properly.
