apple head chihuahua

The term apple head Chihuahua refers to the shape of the head of a baby Chihuahua. The dome of the skull is wider than the mandible, giving rise to the description “apple head”. It is noted that the top of the head has a slight depression. This depression is called a molera (Spanish for fontanelle) and corresponds to the “soft spot” on a baby’s head. Some Chis have it, some don’t.

There was disagreement for a time as to whether the presence of a molera in an apple head Chihuahua was a bad thing and should be considered a demerit for lineage evaluation. Recently, this has been seen as totally discountable. The presence or absence of a molera does NOT influence the pedigree of a Chihuahua.

On October 30, 1990, the American Kennel Club adopted a set of standards for the Chihuahua as a breed. It did not differ from the previous standard of April 14, 1943. Listed for “Head” is the following description: “A well rounded “apple dome” skull, with or without a molar.” So even though the official description of the apple head Chihuahua is “apple dome,” you can’t argue with the official AKC breed standard for “Expression”: Wild!

The AKC breed standard weight limit for a Chi is 6 pounds. If your young apple head Chihuahua gains too much weight, the “apple head” will disappear sooner than with simple aging. Just like in humans, too much weight puts stress on all systems, especially the heart. Be gentle with your pet and do not give large meals or food scraps.

Also, the tiny legs of an apple head Chihuahua cannot easily support the extra gross weight. They will develop a condition called slipped knees, which is a knee injury caused by a fracture of the patella. It can be solved with an operation, but that is an expense and a pain that is not necessary to incur. Be sure to get your Apple Head Chihuahua from a breeder who has carefully checked their breeding stock for hereditary weaknesses. And of course, don’t let your Chi jump off your arms or other high places. Your joints just can’t take the stress.

You’ll keep your Apple Head Chihuahua healthy for as much of his 15-year lifespan as possible by limiting his diet and correctly providing him with the exercise he and YOU demand!
