Designer Dog Breed – Meet the Roodle

Celebrities like Paris Hilton can carry their dogs in their Gucci bags, adorned with the sparkly necklace. But the recent trend in designer dogs seems to suggest that ordinary people are picking up on this unfortunate trend.

However, instead of just buying diamond collars, people are demanding crossbreed dogs with catchy trade names. We have had Spoodle, Groodle, Labradoodle, Spanador, Digger, and Retrievator. Now folks, meet the Roodle.

The roodle is a cross between a poodle and a rottweiler. They are the successful brainchild of a Melbourne, Australia breeder. Fred Freeman has successfully raised 3 litters of roodles, some of which reach as far away as Hawaii.

Roodles have the wrinkled fur of a poodle, but they are larger. They are quite robust and quite large, with long drooping ears. Freeman describes the dogs as having the intelligence of a Rottweiler, but tame and easy to train. Their roodles are also not aggressive, they don’t shed, they don’t smell, and they are low on the allergy scale.

The idea of creating a non-allergic dog was started by the original labradoodle breeder, Wally Conran. Wally was the manager of the Royal Guide Dog Association in Australia at the time. Someone in need of a non-allergenic guide dog contacted the Guide Dog Association, and Wally successfully crossed a labrador with a poodle that fit this purpose.

So the origins of the labradoodle were quite in keeping with how many of what are now considered purebred dogs were created. That is, they were created with a specific purpose in mind.

But the popularity of the labradoodle has created a new set of problems. Namely, many unscrupulous people – some with no experience in dog breeding and others with little or no experience in breeding labradoodles or other similar crosses – jumped on the bandwagon. The demand meant that these dogs were expensive, the supply was tight, and this attracted many to this new field.

But the breeding of dogs, especially of different breeds, is not easy. In Wally Conran’s original efforts, not all labradoodles were low in allergies. And when it comes to trying to find new combinations, a lack of knowledge can produce disastrous results. For example, raising two dogs with similar genetic weaknesses can lead to new litters being born with a higher probability of the health problems associated with those breeds. Other factors include provision. If people expect certain traits based on what decent breeders have produced, and pay a lot of money for a dog that makes ours completely different, those dogs may end up being abandoned.

In the case of a dog bought to be low allergenic, this probability is higher, and this is exactly what is happening to many of the labradoodles that are bought now in the US They are ending up in shelters because they do not have the characteristics of the carefully raised cattle from which the variation originated.

And since poorly bred Rottweilers can be very aggressive, if the roodle trend takes off in the same way, this could be a disaster for everyone. Especially if a family with children buys one expecting the docile nature of the roodles created by Mr. Freeman and ends up with a large, aggressive dog.

Labradoodles are not consistent breeds. And given that ten years were spent trying to get a Rottweiler poodle cross, there is every indication to think that roodles are not a consistent breed either. That means that simply pairing a Rottweiler with a Poodle will not automatically give you certain characteristics, especially in temperament.

Normally, contacting an association for a recommended breeder would solve this type of problem. But in this brave new world of designer dogs, this may not always be the case. Especially if the labradoodle experience is something to go through.

Breeders at Rutland Manor and Tegan Park in Australia started their cattle from Labs, Poodles and Labradoodles from Don Evans, another breeder who had discovered the breed independently of the Guide Dog Association. Those labradoodles were legitimate labradoodles and kept records of all subsequent hatchlings. They also determined which coats were low allergenic. They carried out extensive research and breeding programs to come up with the dog that has been characterized as a ‘labradoodle’. Contrary to popular knowledge, they are not a product of the exclusive mix in Labradors and Poodles. Occasionally other races were used, due to certain characteristics.

Breeders at Rutland Manor and Tegan Park began calling their dogs, and the descendants of that breed by renowned breeders, Australian labradoodles, to distinguish them from indiscriminately produced labrador-poodle mixes. The quality of the mixtures was not controlled, many were allergenic, however, people with allergies were tricked into buying them, hoping they would not have allergic reactions.

The International Labradoodle Association was originally created to help maintain the quality and characteristics of this new designer dog. However, they are now looking to call all Labrador-Poodle crosses ‘Australian Labradoodles’. If this is successful, consumers will have no way of knowing if they are buying what they think they are buying and what their health requirements determine they need. The end result will be the euthanasia of more abandoned dogs due to careless association and even more careless breeders.

It does not bode well for the roodle.
