How to choose the right dog breed for your family

At some point or another, most children will beg their parents for a dog. Those who have owned a dog before or have always wanted one may be considering giving in to their child’s plea. However, before parents make a decision, they should think about which breeds are best suited for their family.

Why is it important to choose the right breed?

Like children, dogs are a lot of work. They require care, attention and exercise. If they don’t get these things, they could end up sick or unhappy.

Because dogs depend on their owner to provide them with a good life, families should not accept dogs they cannot handle. Choosing the wrong breed could mean the dog and/or family will not meet your needs.

How to Find Information on Dog Breeds

The easiest way to get information on dog breeds is to search the AKC website. This website lists all dog breeds and talks about topics like:

– Exercise requirements. High-energy dogs, such as Jack Russell terriers, should not be adopted unless the family has time to walk them every day.

– Grooming requirements. Some breeds require more grooming than other dogs. For example, Maltese terriers need to have their coats trimmed regularly. If this is not done, your hair may become tangled.

– Temper. While all dogs can be sweetened with proper training, some are more mild-tempered than others. Labradors are known to be good with children, while terriers have a reputation for being “fidgety” and loud.

– Trainability. When a dog is easily trained, life becomes much easier for the dog owner. Untrained dogs tend to misbehave more often.

Are some breeds better for children than others?

Highly trainable breeds are great with children, as they are eager to please. Some examples of these breeds are Labradors and Golden Retrievers. Breeds like German Shepherds and Border Collies are also very easy to train.

Although some parents would prefer not to get specific breeds, all breeds are good with children if they are properly trained and socialized. The size of the animal must also be considered.

Many people (especially men) have never imagined owning a small dog. While this is fine, dogs that are too large may not be suitable for certain conditions. Large dogs require a lot of space and this could be a problem if they live indoors. They also eat a lot more food.

Small dogs like the Chihuahua get nervous around small children. This is because younger children tend to play rougher than adults. A tail pull could cause the dog to feel threatened and react aggressively.

Finally, it is necessary to evaluate health problems. If a breed is known to have certain health problems, the parents may not want to adopt the dog. Illnesses and medical problems can result in high veterinary bills. If someone is allergic to dogs, a dog that doesn’t shed a lot should be chosen.

Taking a little time to choose the right dog is important and can contribute to a happy home.
