Mykonos or Ibiza? You be the judge

A question we get asked quite often is: “Should we go to Mykonos or Ibiza”? There seems to be a kind of rivalry between islands. So this year, Kim and I decided to do both islands one after the other and see which one we liked the most.

I’ll get to the point. Kim and I personally like Mykonos better!

Let’s talk a little about Ibiza first …

Interestingly, Ibiza is much prettier than I thought in some areas and much dirtier than I thought in others. As many of you probably know, Ibiza is a CRAZY party place. I mean partying non-stop. Never, never, never end! It’s like a kind of science experiment to see how long you can go without sleep. It’s totally over the top!

That said, I think Ibiza is worth going (and I would go again). You just have to know what you’re getting into. Ibiza is mostly twenty-somethings doing drugs and partying until they crash. Hospitals literally placed IV drips outside of clubs to help indulgents to their feet.

Ibiza is a city of total electronic music. There are DJ’s everywhere! You’ll find DJs in restaurants, supermarkets, and probably under the bathroom sink. They really are everywhere! Personally, I think that’s good. Love it! Ibiza boasts the biggest top DJ in the world. We saw David Guetta, Swedish House Mafia and Avicci while we were there. They were all incredible shows and totally worth seeing.

So why is Mykonos better you are probably asking?

Well here’s the thing: other than the party, I didn’t find Ibiza to be as beautiful as Mykonos or to have as much to offer as great restaurants and fantastic culture.

Yes, Ibiza is very beautiful in some places. For example, I thought the Blue Marlin beach club was beautiful. Aside from a few places here and there, I just didn’t think it was as beautiful as Mykonos. I know there are beautiful outlying places like Formentera, but we only stay in Ibiza so I can’t comment on that.

We stayed at the Ushuaia hotel. Ushuaia is like a hotel and a nightclub had a baby. Here’s the deal with The Ushuaia: the hotel has a headlining DJ outside your room from 5pm to midnight, 7 days a week! It definitely takes some getting used to. Having 2000 ravers outside your door every night until midnight is insane!

But this, my friends, is Ibiza! Please do not get me wrong. We loved Ibiza and we will be back for sure. All in all, Ibiza is very close to Mykonos. However, for my Euro, Mykonos definitely wins!

Now let’s talk a little about Mykonos …

Mykonos has all the above positives that Ibiza has and much more! For example, if you want to relax, there are tons of cool and sexy beaches to chill out. If you are a foodie, there are many amazing restaurants. If you want to experience real (Greek) culture, it’s all there. If you love headlining DJs, there are more than you will have the time or energy to watch.

There is something intangible that you cannot identify with Mykonos. Well, it’s the Greek people. They are incredibly warm, loving and kind even in the midst of the crazy economic crisis that they are in.

This is what I mean: the hotel we are staying at is called The Andronikos Hotel. It is directed by Marco Andronikos and Elena Alexandri. These two know how to run a hotel!

I can not say enough about this place. The Andronikos hotel has this perfect match, making you feel like part of an amazing Greek family and staying in a modern hotel with a real (not manufactured) soul.

Our friends Elsa and Gianni from Mykonos Exclusive got us excited about this place. Elsa and Gianni are the king and queen of Mykonos. They know everything and everyone. They have the key to the island and can open doors for you that you didn’t even know existed.

Honestly, whether you choose to go to Mykonos or Ibiza, you will have a great time. No doubt about that. If you must choose between the two islands, I say Opa! Go to Mykonos!
