Taylor Lautner’s workout routine as Jacob Black in New Moon

Before I describe Taylor Lautner’s training, here’s a brief biography…

Taylor Lautner was born on February 12, 1992. She was also 17 years old when Twilight New Moon was filmed. From the age of 6 to 13 he performed in martial arts. At the age of 12 he won the Junior World Championship as a black belt in karate. Lautner began his acting career in 2001, and in 2008 he played Jacob Black, the Native American character in Twilight.

The director considered casting someone else to play Jacob Black in New Moon.

New Moon director Catherine Hardwicke considered casting someone else to replace Taylor Lautner. She wanted someone with more muscle and more believability to play Jacob Black. You see, Jacob becomes a werewolf in this movie and she wanted someone with a stronger physical presence than Taylor Lautner.

Taylor had to gain muscle quickly or possibly lose her role in New Moon.

Fortunately, Taylor had a solid martial arts background that helped him get this ripped look. If he were a 17-year-old from a less athletic background, he would not have been able to display the same degree of muscle tone in such a short amount of time.

The secret of Jacob Black’s perfect abs

Taylor Lautner’s abs weren’t just the result of 9 months of training leading up to the shooting of New Moon. Her years of training in martial arts have created a muscular density and muscular maturity that is not normally seen until someone reaches their 20s. People who compete in martial arts gain power by tightening their core… this tightening over time builds hard, defined abdominal muscles. The way to reveal abs is to cut down to a low body fat percentage, but the reason Taylor Lautner had an exceptional six pack was due to her martial arts background.

The gaining muscle part for Taylor was easy

Taylor quickly gained 20 pounds of mass due to her age. What the fitness magazines never tell you is that you can easily gain mass when you first train. The amount of muscle that Taylor put into her body was the natural amount of muscle that she was supposed to have. It’s not big by any stretch of the imagination, which is a good thing. Like almost every young woman I’ve worked with, Taylor was able to quickly complete and approach her genetic potential quickly. She did it in 9 months, as she had so much time that she could devote to this…this usually takes between 12 and 24 months for most guys.

When he was interviewed about how he got in shape for New Moon…

If you watch any of Taylor Lautner’s interviews, you’ll notice that he’s pretty vague about his workouts… he says things like “I worked out a lot and ate a lot.” Honestly, this is all it takes for a young man in his late teens or early 20s to gain those 15-25 pounds. The trick is to thin and dial. This is where I come in and help men and women achieve that lean “Hollywood” look…
