Review on Five Minds for the Future

In this book, Howard Gardner highlights five minds that are critical to surviving in today’s digital age and century. As we live in a digital world and technological age, it is mandatory to inculcate and cultivate the habits of using these minds. The five minds in summary are:

  1. Disciplined Mind: For each of us to be successful in life, we need to focus on one or two disciplines in order to succeed. Or, we must commit to doing chores and mastering the discipline in a subject takes about 10 years. To develop this disciplined mind, one must constantly work long enough to master the discipline. Going forward, Gardner emphasizes that for every productive and successful individual, they must focus on one or two disciplines proficiently in order to thrive in the next generation.
  2. Synthesize Mind: it is basically integrating one or more disciplines to make effective decisions and actions to be successful. Most of the leaders and presidents have to use this mind most of the time in their career.
  3. Creative mind: involves thinking creatively and outside of the box. This results in creative breakthroughs, inventions, innovations, etc. The author emphasizes that having a creative mind alone does not help you get anywhere unless it is supported by a disciplined mind and a synthesized mind. Either the creative mind is a total failure. Anything one does creatively must be practiced and mastered regularly and become a skill in that particular discipline.
  4. Respectful mind: is another word for tolerant mind. Cultivating respectful minds helps to celebrate the difference between opinions, views, judgments, religious views, castes, races, etc. Here one needs to be respectful of each other across nations, groups and communities.
  5. Ethical Mind: it is the construction of ethics, principles and moral values. Here religious values play a big role. Gardner also considers the digital form of communication, especially chat, to be unethical and emphasizes here that one should be as ethical as possible supported by a respectful mind.

This book is a book that I would recommend reading not only to educators but also to people in all walks of life, including management and leadership. The language is very easy to follow and Gardener has been very sensible in conveying his ideas. This book is one of the best I have ever read because I believe that most of us lack the five minds and we need to make sure that we have these 5 minds as a means to live and prosper for decades to come. I personally would give this book 5 stars.
