The self-destructive path away from God

Sometimes we come face to face with a Bible verse that we don’t really want to read, that we wish wasn’t there. But we need to hear it, because it is the truth. When God’s children turn their backs on God, nothing can be done about it.

Not a thousand oxen slaughtered to be slaughtered. Even the blood of Jesus that flowed on the cross was not shed by these people. They were lucky.

26If we give up and turn our backs on everything we have learned, everything that has been given to us, all the truth that we now know, we repudiate the sacrifice of Christ and we are left alone to face the Judgment…

This is not light music and may you and I never be in that line at heaven’s gates!

I’ve talked about my Facebook friends before. They were part of the church; one was even a minister. Somewhere along the way the wheels of his faith came off. They no longer believe.

But instead of walking away and moving in a different direction, they stand by and criticize and laugh at the church behind their hands. What a pity. Sometimes my eyes fill with tears and I can’t believe that people can say and do what they say and do.

I can hear some people asking why I don’t delete them. Because I hope with all my heart that one day you will hear or see one of my entries and it will make you think again. Perhaps they will have a moment of understanding and decide to love their first Truth again.

But, people say, the verse says that there is no sacrifice that will get them into heaven. This is where my naive and childish faith comes into play: I believe that when someone kneels before God, his love is great enough and more than enough to forgive that sinner as well.

That is why I will continue to live as an example of the love of Jesus. I always try to look past his actions and see the possibly insecure person lurking in the corner. I always wonder if they sometimes say as they lie alone in their beds: “And if there really is a God…”.

This thought drives me to try even harder, because I can be the only ray of light that shines the light of God in that person’s dark life. We must never stop being the hands and feet of God. We must never stop shining God’s light into the dark world.

What a terrible knowledge for any being on earth to know what God’s judgment will be like: 27… and a fierce and powerful judgment will be!

How bad is this! May you and I, our families, friends, and everyone we’ve ever known ever have to face that judgment.

Reflection

Do you know people who have turned their back on God?

What can you do to show them God?

Who can you ask to help you?

Prayer

Our Father, my heart aches for the people who have turned their backs on you. May my example persuade you to change your mind. May my actions show your love. Maybe, just maybe their minds can return to You… Amen.
